Early Life and Career

Gretchen Esther Whitmer was born on August 23, 1971, in East Lansing, Michigan. She earned her law degree from the University of Michigan Law School and worked as an assistant prosecutor before entering politics.

Political Career

Whitmer began her political career in the Michigan House of Representatives, serving from 2006 to 2015. She was then elected to the Michigan Senate, where she served from 2015 to 2018.

In 2018, Whitmer was elected Governor of Michigan, becoming the first woman to hold the position. She defeated Republican candidate Bill Schuette in a close race.
